I helped to create the Visme infographic help system in Writing for Software Documentation, taught by Dr. Karen Kuralt, in the spring semester of 2015.

Online help system created to help novices learn how to use tools developed by the Visme creators in order to create infographics for school, work, or personal use. This was a collaborative project in which I worked with other fellow students. I served as project manager and assisted with editing, writing instructions, developed screenshots, and visual design of the project.

Beginners, or novices, who want to create infographics for school, work, or personal use. 

Initially, we picked the software that we wanted to learn and create instructions. Then, we created a team charter which outlined our roles, responsibilities, and conflict resolution methods in terms of creating the help system. We each learned how to use Visme and divided the work amongst each other. We held meetings each week to discuss goals and to create the help system. 

Effective communication was the most difficult thing during this project. We each had our own style of communicating which often conflicted with each other. I learned better ways to be a leader in a collaborative project and how to communicate more effectively. The key was working with a team charter that we developed which enabled us to manage the project more efficiently.

Sarl Carliner created a model that describes three levels of information design similar to the Visme help system: physical, cognitive, and affective. The physical level is the ability to find information. For example, we created a menu with specific headings that will help the user find the information that they need. Cognitive level helps users to understand information. We used chunking to simplify instructions and screenshots to support the instructions. The affective level motivates users to perform the tasks. We only used the basic information to create infographics so that novices won't be intimidated by using a new software.
